| | | In general, an historic landmark is an honorary designation that is conferred upon any improvement, building, structure, place, object etc. that has been determined to be of significant cultural, architectural or historical value to the citizens of a City, region, State or nation and has been legally designated as such. An historic landmark designation can therefore be conferred upon a resource by local government, the State of California or the Department of the Interior. However, the eligibility criteria used to designate an historic landmark does vary slightly between local, state and federal agencies. Likewise, a resource that is designated as a historic landmark by one government agency does not necessarily mean that the other agencies have also designated the same resource as a historic landmark. City of Whittier’s Official Local Register of Historic ResourcesThe City of Whittier currently has 48 City designated historic landmarks and four historic districts within the community. Some of these resources are also listed on the California Register of Historic Resources and/or on the National Register of Historic Places.
