General Municipal Elections

The City’s General Municipal Elections are held on the second Tuesday of April in even-numbered years.  In addition, Special Elections are held when called by the City Council.

The next general municipal election will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, for the purpose of electing Council Members for Districts 2 and 4 and a city-wide elected Mayor.


On June 3, 2014, Whittier voters approved a Charter Amendment to elect Council Members from four geographically defined districts. A city-wide mayor position was also established.

District boundaries were set with expert assistance to adhere to state law and after community input on what neighborhoods should stay together.

2018 Election

The next general municipal election will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, for the purpose of electing District 2 and 4 Council Members and a city-wide Mayor.

Candidates can obtain nomination papers between December 18, 2017 and January 12, 2018.  Please note, City Hall is closed from noon on December 22, 2017 and reopen on January 2, 2018.

The last day to register to vote  for the upcoming election is March 26, 2018.

Voter registration is available through the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk at or by calling 1-800-815-2666.  Voter registration forms can also be picked up from City Hall, Whittier Libraries, and post offices.
