Savage Canyon Landfill is open to residents and businesses located in the City of Whittier. Savage Canyon Landfill only accepts waste generated from the City of Whittier and its contract haulers. Whittier residents must provide proof of residency with either a valid California Identification or two (2) recent utility bills. The hours of operation are 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Saturday except holidays.
The landfill is closed on the following holidays:
- New Years Day
- Memorial Day
- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Christmas Day
The landfill may be subject to closure to the public on rainy days. Due to permit tonnage limitations, the landfill may close early on additional days if necessary. Please contact the landfill gatehouse at (562) 698-1223 for more information.
Savage Canyon Landfill does not accept any of the following: green waste, hazardous materials, appliances, tires, liquid waste, pesticides, herbicides, automotive products, paints, solvents, acids, caustics, batteries, electronic waste, CRTs, explosives (ammunition), compressed gas cylinders, contaminated soil and radioactive waste. Savage Canyon Landfill Rates
(Effective August 1, 2012 - July 31, 2014)
- Trash - $38.41/ton
- Inert - $43.85/ton (dirt mixed with rocks, concrete, grass, roots, etc., asphalt, rocks, concrete)
- Hard to Handle - $53.90/ton (any waste that would require additional landfilling process i.e. large pieces of concrete, stumps)
Contractors wishing to dispose of large quantities of uncontaminated clean fill dirt, please call the landfill at (562) 698-1223, to make arrangements.
Special Saturday Residential Discounts, with proper I.D. showing a Whittier residential address, entitles you to one dump per Saturday up to a 3/4 ton pick-up truck. A $20 cash payment is made at the Landfill Gatehouse upon entering.
Discounted disposal permits issued to single family residences can be purchased at City Hall, Public Works counter, Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm. This $42 permit allows for six dumps equal to 3/4 ton truck (not to exceed one ton) or equivalent size trailer. Truck and trailer combinations are not acceptable. Only one permit will be issued per twelve month period, however permits are valid until all six entries are used.
Saturday residential discounts and discounted disposal permits are limited to refuse and other allowable items such as wood, plaster, fencing, clean dirt, demolition material, roofing, stucco, iron, tile, and lumber. Small amounts of brick, rock, concrete or any combination of may not exceed a five gallon bucket per load. Refuse must be generated at the address listed on permit. No refuse generated in connection with any commercial establishment or enterprise shall be accepted under the permit. For example, the permit is not applicable to gardeners, landlords, contractors, or other commercial establishments. Items not allowed for disposal with this permit include hazardous waste, liquids, illegal materials, asphalt, large amounts of concrete, greenwaste, appliances, air conditions or electronic waste.
