Fire Station 59 Paramedic Assessment Unit
Posted On: August 2, 2018
Los Angeles County Fire Officials and the City of Whittier announce the launch of a new paramedic assessment unit at Fire Station 59 in Battalion 8. The product of nearly two years of discussions and data gathering, a paramedic assessment unit will enhance life safety and shorten response times for the Whittier community. Paramedic Assessment Units (PAUs) send emergency responders trained in advance life support to respond on 911 calls for medical assistance. The PAU will be equipped with basic and advance life support equipment as well as one Paramedic dedicated to this area who can render aid as needed. Faster deployment of advanced life support reduces the wait time between a critical medical emergency and treatment, improving patient survival and recovery rates.
In his letter announcing the change, L.A. County Fire Chief Daryl Osby noted his pride in “…the relationship between the City of Whittier and the Los Angeles County Fire Department,” stating, “we know that these changes will allow us to continue delivering outstanding paramedic services to the residents we serve.”
Mayor Joe Vinatieri stated, “A paramedic assessment engine is a huge improvement in service in our community, providing faster access to advanced life support in critical medical emergencies, when every second counts.”
Mayor Pro Tem Josue Alvarado added, “As a Council, we’re consistently striving to improve services for Whittier residents, and a paramedic assessment unit is just one of many ways in which we are responding to what our residents are asking for. I’d like to thank Station 59 for their service and for answering the request for enhanced service to our community.”
Council Member Cathy Warner concurred, stating, “I’d like to congratulate the Mayor and City Manager on their fine work in negotiating for a paramedic engine that will improve service and reduce the time it takes to get lifesaving advanced medical support to residents in their time of need.”
The Paramedic Assessment Unit deployment began August 1, 2018. Los Angeles County Fire provides fire and emergency medical services to the residents of the City of Whittier. Fire Station 59 is located on Scott Ave. near Whittier Blvd.
