Attempt Homicide and Carjacking

On May 19, 2013 at 2153 hours, Whittier Police responded to the area of Hadley Street and Newlin Avenue regarding a carjacking. The victim stated that he was in the company of the suspects when an argument ensued. The suspects used physical force to take the vehicle from the victim. Although the victim was familiar with the suspects, he was unable to provide their names. The vehicle, a 2004 gray Ford Expedition, was later located by officers nearby which was abandoned. The suspects were described as one male Hispanic in his 30’s and two female Hispanics in their 20’s-30’s.
The following day, May 20, 2013 at 0957 hours, Whittier Police responded to the Rite Aid located at 8508 Painter Avenue, in the City of Whittier on an attempt homicide. The officers contacted a witness who stated that her friend, the victim, was struck several times on the head with a wood plank in the area of 12500 Whittier Boulevard. The officers responded to that address and located a male transient bleeding profusely from his head. The male suspect had fled the location. Paramedics arrived and discovered serious head trauma and a possible puncture wound to the back of the victim’s left thigh. Due to his injuries, he was transported to USC Medical Center for medical treatment. At this time, the victim of the attempt homicide is listed in critical condition due to trauma to his head, torso and left leg.
Later that day, the carjacking victim saw one of the female suspects at Kennedy Park. Officers responded and took her into custody. Additional information led to the arrest of the other two suspects on Tuesday May 21, 2013. During the arrest of the other two suspects, detectives were able to connect the male suspect in the carjacking as the suspect in the attempt homicide that occurred on May 20, 2013. All three suspects are being held at the Whittier Police Department for the following charges.
Roderick Castro is a 30-year-old transient of Whittier. He is charged with attempted murder and carjacking. He is being held without bail.
April Montoya is a 35-year-old transient of Whittier. She is charged with carjacking and is being held on $100,000 bail.
Nicole Martin is a 22-year-old transient of Whittier. She is charged with carjacking and being held on $100,000 bail.
