Large Seizure of Illegal Fireworks in Whittier

WHITTIER, CA –On Sunday, June 23rd at approximately 7pm, officers heard an audible alarm in the 12000 block of Philadelphia Street. They noticed an open roll-up door in a commercial building near Whittier High School with people inside. Believing a burglary may be occurring, officers investigated and five subjects were subsequently detained. Upon further investigation they discovered a cache of illegal fireworks stored inside the building. A warrant was obtained and approximately 2.5 tons of fireworks were seized with the assistance of the LA County Fire Department. According to the LA County Fire Investigator this was one of the top three seizures of illegal fireworks this year. The street value was estimated at approximately $100,000. The subjects were arrested for 18715 PC (Possession of explosive material near a theater, hall, school, college, church, hotel, or other public building) and are being held on $500,000 bail.
