Poetry Reading - Central Library

Meet us at the Whittier Public Library - Central location on Saturday May 16th at 2 PM to listen to stimulating, thought-provoking poetry readings.
A group of poets will take to the library stage and read poems, flash fiction, and excerpts from short stories, as well as discuss their work and processes for all their creative writing endeavors.

Featured Poets/Speakers

Rocío Carlos is the author of Coyolxhauqui, Los Angeles (Archetype Press, 2012), A World Below (Mindmade books, 2014), and co-author of ex.her.pt (wirecutter collective, 2016). Her poems have appeared in Chaparral, Angel City Review, The Spiral Orb and Cultural Weekly. Most recently, her work was included in LACMA’s Pacific Standard Time exhibition, Those of This America. She is co-publisher of the Wirecutter Collective.

Ramón García is the author of Strange Signatures (Walton Well Press, 2025), The Chronicles (Red Hen Press, 2015) and Other Countries (What Books Press, 2010), a monograph on the artist Ricardo Valverde (University of Minnesota Press, 2013) and a chapbook Strays (Foundlings Press, 2021). His poetry has appeared in a variety of journals and anthologies, including circulo de poesía, the Best American Poetry anthology, Poetry Goes to the Movies, The Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB), Mandorla: New Writing from the Americas, Gulf Coast and Plume. A former Vice-President of the Board of Trustees at Beyond Baroque Literary Center in Venice, California, he is Associate Editor of Plume poetry magazine. He teaches at California State University, Northridge and lives in Los Angeles.

José Enrique Medina earned his BA in English from Cornell University. His first book Haunt Me won the 2025 Rattle Chapbook Prize. He writes poems, flash fiction and short stories. His work has appeared in Redivider, Best Microfiction 2019 , The Los Angeles Review, and many other publications. He is a VONA fellow and the founder of the Chickens & Poetry Residency for Writers.

Mariano Zaro is a professor of Spanish at Río Hondo Community College (Whittier, California). He is the author of seven books of poetry, most recently The Weight of Sound (Walton Well Press), Decoding Sparrows (What Books, Los Angeles) and Padre Tierra (Olifante, Zaragoza, Spain). Padre Tierra has been translated into English by Blas Falconer and published in a bilingual edition by Artepoética Press (NYC). Zaro’s poems have been included in the anthologies Monster Verse (Penguin Random House), The Coiled Serpent (Tía Chucha Press), Poetry Goes to the Movies (Beyond Baroque Books) and in numerous other journals in Spain, Mexico and the United States. His translations include Buda en llamas by Tony Barnstone and Cómo escribir una canción de amor by Sholeh Wolpé.
