WHITTIER RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS BEST AWARD FOR GREENWAY TRAIL EXTENSION

Whittier, CA — The City of Whittier is proud to announce its recent recognition by the American Public Works Association (APWA) with the BEST Award in the category of "Traffic, Mobility, and Beautification" for the successful completion of the 2.8-mile extension of the Greenway Trail. The award was presented to Whittier City staff during a special luncheon held on December 14, 2023.

The APWA BEST Award acknowledges outstanding public works projects and programs, honoring public agencies and private sector leaders for their exceptional contributions. Whittier competed in the 50,001 to 100,000 population category and was evaluated based on project guidelines that included Project Performance, Unique Aspects, and Quality of Life.

The Greenway Trail extension project in Whittier has received prestigious recognition from the American Public Works Association for its exceptional Project Performance, Unique Aspects, and impact on Quality of Life. The 2.8-mile extension, featuring a 15-foot wide, paved Class I facility, achieved its goals on schedule, demonstrated cost-effectiveness, and actively engaged the public. With safety enhancements at seven rail crossings, including pre-signals in collaboration with Union Pacific Railroad, the project seamlessly integrates with the existing 4.5-mile Greenway Trail. Uniquely, the extension required meticulous coordination with various entities, resulting in innovative features such as seven grade crossings with pedestrian and bicycle pre-signals, upgraded signal equipment, and sustainable elements like drought-tolerant vegetation. Recognized by the National Park Service, the project aligns with their conservation program, enhances access to Community Development Block Grant target areas, and strengthens the City's commitment to comprehensive urban mobility by connecting with various transit options.

The City of Whittier is grateful for the recognition from the American Public Works Association and remains committed to continued excellence in enhancing the quality of life for its residents. The Greenway Trail extension stands as a testament to Whittier's dedication to sustainable and accessible urban development.
