State Fire Marshal's Role and Updated Fire Hazard Maps
Under Government Code Section 51178, the Office of the State Fire Marshal is responsible for identifying fire hazard levels in Local Responsibility Areas (LRAs). This determination is based on consistent, statewide criteria and the expected severity of fire hazards in each area.
In accordance with Government Code Section 51179, the State Fire Marshal must also make recommendations to local agencies regarding Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZs). These recommendations support local governments—cities and counties—as they designate and adopt these zones by ordinance, as outlined in Section 51177(e).
As part of this effort, CAL FIRE released the updated Local Area Fire Hazard Severity Zones Map for Southern California on March 24, 2025.

Whittier's Virtual Fire Map Workshop
Fire Hazard Map Virtual Workshop — June 18, 2025 (Completed Event)
The City of Whittier hosted a virtual workshop on June 18, 2025 to provide residents with information about California’s updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) map and what it means for Whittier.
During the workshop:
- City staff presented an overview of the updated wildfire hazard map and explained how it may impact local properties.
- Los Angeles County Fire Department shared tips on home hardening and creating defensible space to help protect properties from wildfire.
- Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority provided updates on brush clearance and habitat maintenance efforts in the surrounding hillsides.
The State’s updated wildfire hazard map shows the likelihood of wildfire occurring in certain areas over the next 30 to 50 years, based on natural factors such as vegetation, slope, and climate. This map does not represent current fire conditions but may impact insurance, building codes, and defensible space requirements going forward.
